Finland’s foreign minister’s Special Envoy on Peace Mediation in the Horn of Africa, Suldaan Said Ahmed met Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at Villa Somalia.

The Special Envoy had a fruitful discussion with Somali president focusing on further enhancing Finland-Somalia relations and cooperation on promoting peace and stability in the Horn of Africa region.

President Mohamoud thanked Finland’s long-standing support in peace-building, humanitarian aid, the war against terrorists, and rebuilding Somalia’s educational system.

Finland’s Special Envoy on Peace Mediation in the Horn of Africa met also with James Swan, acting UN Special Representative at the Headquarter of the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia, which is located within Mogadishu’s heavily guarded and fortified Halane Area.

The Special Envoy and UN representative discussed Somalia’s current situation and the best ways the International Community could maintain supporting Somalia’s peace- and state-building efforts.

Special envoy Suldaan had also separate meetings during his stay in Mogadishu with the Deputy Prime minister of Somalia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia, the State minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somalia, different lawmakers, the Chief of Staff to the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Advisor of the president of Somalia and UN and EU representatives.

Although Finland has halted new interventions within the bilateral development aid country program with Somalia until progress has been made on readmissions, Finland continues to support stabilization and other development spheres in Somalia.

Finland also helps Somalia together with the international community to fight against terrorism and trains Somalia’s security sectors.
